The Winner of the Short Story Competition 2019

We are delighted to announce that the winner of the Short Story Competition this year is Mai Black from Suffolk, with her story, The Smuggler’s Sweetheart.

It was a tough choice, but in the end the judges chose Mai’s story for its pacing, imagery, atmosphere and symbolism. They felt it was extremely well written and presented and demonstrated real understanding of story structure.

Huge congratulations to Mai! You’ll be able to read The Smuggler’s Sweetheart when it’s published in the January issues of The Fens Magazine.

Congratulations again to the other seven writers who made it onto the shortlist – Cathy Cade, Jane Cochrane, Lesley Bowen, Alan Kahn, Matt Curme, Sonya Hundal and Linda Murdoch.

A big thank you, as always, to our judges, writers Sue Welfare and Jon Lawrence.

And a really big thank you to everyone who entered. We had a record-breaking number of entrants this year, which was wonderful, so thank you for making it a difficult decision!

We run this competition specifically for residents of East Anglia, to encourage writers in our region to explore the unique challenges and opportunities the short story format presents. We were delighted to hear from many of you who had never entered a writing competition before, but who were encouraged to give it a shot. Please keep writing  – the competition will be back next year and we would really love to read more of your stories!
